Lynne M. Deming

serves as editor of Weavings, and also as World Editor/Executive Director of Publishing for The Upper Room. She received an MDiv from Candler School of Theology and a PhD in Hebrew Bible from Emory University. Lynne began her tenure with The Upper Room in 1990 as Editor for Upper Room Books. As a member of Belmont United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, Lynne chaired its Spiritual Formation Committee for several years and has led various Companions in Christ groups. She has a passion for music, plays guitar and violin, and finds swimming, cycling and walking in half-marathons to be great stress relievers. Most importantly, Lynne and her husband, Jim (a United Church of Christ clergy person) welcome any opportunity to Skype with their two sons, daughters-in-law and (almost three) grandchildren who live much too far away.

Into the Water

I’ve been looking through the May/June/July 2012 issue of Weavings, entitled “Why Are You Afraid?” which will be on its way to subscribers soon. It’s always a moving experience to see something that you have crafted actually show up in printed form. As editors, if we are lucky, we are pleased with the result! This time I am. Seeing the print magazine took... Keep Reading

Embracing Gratitude

I was looking through stacks of paper over the weekend, trying to eliminate some of the clutter that had accumulated in our living room over the past year or so. You know the routine—start the year by getting organized. While doing this sorting, I came across a piece of paper that caught my attention. Across the top I had written Things To... Keep Reading

Advent People

Well, it’s almost officially Advent. I say “almost officially” because, for me, Advent begins unofficially on Halloween. Most people I know whose work is associated with religion gravitate either to Advent or Lent. They say “I’m a Lent person” or I’m an Advent person.” As for me, I am an Advent person—always have been. I seem to come alive at this time... Keep Reading

For Reflection

When you let your imagination take you to the first Holy Saturday, the day between Jesus’ horrible crucifixion and stunning resurrection, how do you imagine it to look, feel, or sound to those outside the tomb? ... Keep Reading

Change? Certainly!

Back in the summer, when I first took on editorial responsibility for the Weavings journal, I wrote a blog about “the times they are a’changin.” I talked about the change in leadership for the magazine, and the changes taking place in the publishing industry as a whole. Well, several months have passed and we have put together two issues of the journal.... Keep Reading

Editor’s Notes

Accomplishment Hello everyone, from the new editor of Weavings! If you’ve read the blogs from earlier this summer, you know that Pam Hawkins has left Upper Room Ministries to take an associate pastor position at a local United Methodist Church (my church, in fact). We miss her greatly, but we know that she is where she needs to be. So now, I am... Keep Reading

The Times They Are A-Changin’!

These words might sound familiar to you, especially if you are of a certain age. This folk song from the ‘60’s heralded the cultural changes occurring during that time. A publishing colleague recently sent me an email with this title in the subject line, after he heard the news that I would be the new editor of Weavings. And he was right.... Keep Reading

New Beginnings

One of the articles in a recent issue of Weavings (“Do Not Be Anxious About Tomorrow”) was written by Flora Wuellner. Her article is entitled “When the Stars Began to Fall,” and is a deep and thoughtful discussion about finding new beginnings in the midst of threatening circumstances. Flora is a friend, a mentor, and has for many years been a role... Keep Reading
